A place to discuss stem-cell therapy questions in Milton
You may be comparing PRP with other approaches, wondering what a stem-cell or exosome claim means, or deciding whether to see a specialist. Bring your questions, medication list and relevant records so the conversation starts with your situation.
What can we discuss?
A consultation can cover the differences between these approaches, the evidence and uncertainties, and questions about risks, alternatives and next steps. If you are considering PRP therapy in Milton, our team can explain the assessment process.
When might a referral be appropriate?
Some concerns, including certain shoulder or spine problems, may need specialist assessment or procedures with image guidance. The next step depends on your concern and the clinical assessment; not every procedure is performed at OlympusMD.

What is the difference?
Stem cells, exosomes and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) describe different biological materials. Knowing what a treatment contains, what has been studied and what is approved can help you have a more useful conversation with your clinician.
Stem cells
Living cells that can renew themselves and develop into specialized cell types. Their capabilities depend on the type of stem cell. A finding about one cell type does not establish the effectiveness of every product marketed as a stem-cell treatment.
Exosomes
Small vesicles released by cells that can carry proteins and genetic material. They are not living stem cells. Their role in cell communication is a subject of research; that biology alone does not demonstrate that a commercial treatment works.
PRP
Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a patient’s own blood by concentrating platelets. It is different from a stem-cell or exosome product. Evidence and suitability vary with the condition and procedure being considered.
Are stem-cell and exosome treatments FDA approved?
There are no FDA-approved exosome products. FDA has warned about unapproved products and reported serious adverse events. “Cell-free,” “natural” or “FDA registered” does not by itself establish safety or approval. Read the FDA safety alert.
Some cellular therapies do have specific FDA-approved uses. For example, Ryoncil is approved for steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease in children aged two months and older. That approval does not extend to general joint repair, anti-aging or other unrelated uses.
The useful question is about the exact product and intended use. Ask to see the applicable approval information or, for investigational care, the study oversight and regulatory documentation. A clinic registration or trial listing is not equivalent to FDA product approval. FDA’s patient guidance explains this distinction.
Six questions to bring to a consultation
- What exactly is being proposed? Ask for the product name, source, preparation and method of administration.
- What diagnosis or goal are we addressing? A clear clinical question makes it easier to compare reasonable options.
- What human evidence matches my situation? Ask whether studies evaluated the same condition, product and route, and how outcomes were measured.
- What are the risks and uncertainties? Discuss your medical history, possible complications and the limits of the evidence.
- What alternatives should I consider? Compare established care, rehabilitation or other appropriate options, including the choice to defer treatment.
- What happens afterward? Clarify follow-up, who handles complications, total costs and what would count as a meaningful result.
Bring medication and supplement lists, relevant test results and your main questions. You should leave an appointment understanding the proposed next step and why it fits your situation.
