Researchers often study whether inflammatory markers are associated with later illness or functional decline. An association can be scientifically useful without proving that the marker itself caused the outcome or that lowering it will prevent the problem.
First, does a marker predict an outcome? Second, does a biological process contribute to causing that outcome? Third, does a particular treatment improve the outcome? These questions require different evidence.
A blood test such as CRP can indicate inflammation but cannot identify its source by itself. [1] That limitation matters when a research observation is turned into a consumer “inflammation score.”
Age, existing disease, smoking, medicines, and recent infection can influence findings. Ask whether investigators accounted for relevant differences and whether the study followed participants over time or simply measured them once.
Even a well-designed observational study cannot replace a controlled trial of a proposed intervention. Changing a biomarker is not automatically the same as preserving independence or preventing disease.
Age- and risk-appropriate screening, physical activity, and management of diagnosed conditions have defined clinical purposes. [2] [3] They should not be displaced by a promise to reverse aging through an unspecified anti-inflammatory program.
A careful reading can preserve interest in aging science while avoiding conclusions the research did not establish. That is a more useful basis for medical decisions than treating every correlation as a treatment recommendation.
